I was just praying the Evening Office from the Northumbria Community and read this Celtic expression of faith that speaks deeply to the day we find ourselves in .. particularly the final stanza. Perhaps it might become a "seasonal creed" if there were such a thing. A statement of what we believe (credo) for the "God appointed season" (kairos) in which we find ourselves.
Lord, You have always given
bread for the coming day;
and though I am poor,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always given
strength for the coming day;
and though I am weak,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always given
peace for the coming day;
and though of anxious heart,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always kept
me safe in trials;
and now, tried as I am,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always marked
the road for the coming day;
and though it may be hidden,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always lightened
this darkness of mine;
and though the night is here,
today I believe.
Lord, You have always spoken
when time was ripe;
and though you be silent now,
today I believe.
For what it’s worth, the significant difference between an expression of faith like this and the "positive faith speak" of most charismatics and Pentecostals (of which I am one), is that this Celctic expression does not deny the true state of the believer’s being as they reach in complete trust that God’s goodness will be displayed to them.
There is no fear of acknowledging their true human state, for they understand that in the acknowledgement of their own weakness, God’s strength is made perfect; they understand that in the acknowledgement of the poverty of their own human condition, that is where they will see God’s richness brought to bear; they understand that in the acknowledgement of their own inability to add an hour to their own life, that is where they will see that God is truly able .. in every way. The willingness to acknowledge my own inability, is the gateway to seeing God’s ability at work in my life.
Don’t be afraid to acknowledge who and what you really are. When compared to God, none of us really stack up anyway. He’s the only one who does.
